What Is Sugar Cane Mulch?

Locally grown, Doyles Sugar Cane Mulch is an organic mulch made from dried sugar cane leaves and is an environmentally friendly, extremely cost effective and renewable resource that has many uses.

Improves Soil

One of the benefits of sugar cane mulch is that it’s an organic mulch. It is a perfect mulch for use in vegetable gardens and around fruit trees and bushes. This means that when it is applied to your garden it retains moisture as it breaks down creating organic matter, which is absorbed into the soil, improving the quality of the soil. The enriched soil will help to promote the healthy growth of your plants long after the mulch has decomposed.

Erosion Control

Summer is the perfect time to have a garden full of beautifully coloured plants and flowers. However, our Fraser Coast region is prone to storms during the summertime which can cause the thin layer of topsoil to be washed away. A protective layer of sugar cane mulch is ideal for preventing erosion as the outer layer of mulch binds to the soil, allowing water to penetrate through to the plants’ roots while preventing erosion.

Composting

Cost effective bulk ingredient in large-scale composting such as orchards and vineyards. It helps balance the nitrogen-rich "green" materials and decomposes over time, adding valuable organic matter to the soil.

Prevents Weed Growth

Another benefit of using sugar cane mulch is that applying a thick layer of the mulch will prevent the “weed’s seed” from reaching the soil below. Similarly, any weeds that were already in the soil will not be able to grow as the mulch will block the sunlight that weeds need.

Stock Feed

In drought conditions can be used to supplement cattle.

Chicken Coop Bedding

Warm and comfortable for your hens to nest in. It's a natural, cost-effective, and readily available material that can help with moisture retention, weed suppression, and soil enrichment as it breaks down.

How To Apply Sugar Cane Mulch

Sugar cane mulch should be applied to a depth of around 100mm to be most effective. Additionally, once the sugar cane mulch has been applied, thoroughly soak it, as this will allow it to settle.
